What is Expository preaching?

PsalmsHere at Open Door, our main “diet” of sermons is expository preaching. Expository preaching basically means explaining the meaning of a passage verse by verse, as opposed to preaching on a theme or topic. In practice, the pastor works through an entire book of the Bible, preaching week by week on the next passage of that book. The advantage of this method is that the congregation gets to hear the whole of God’s Word, within its proper context. The preacher cannot skip over “difficult” passages, or pick his favorite hobby horses. This avoids the unbalanced diet that one typically gets from topical sermons that jump around the Bible. The goal of expository preaching is to convey the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).
